Run to Runway event draws fitness enthusiasts at Bhogapuram airport

Vizag Runners Society, in association with GMR Airports, organised the ‘Run to Runway’ Airside 5K Run/Walk event on Sunday at the newly built Bhogapuram International Airport, offering participants a rare opportunity to run on the airport’s airside runway ahead of its scheduled inauguration in July 2026.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from runners representing various running communities, fitness enthusiasts, sponsors, and supporters from across the country. Participants described the experience of running on an operational-grade runway as unique and memorable.

Organisers said the event was aimed at promoting fitness and community engagement while highlighting one of Andhra Pradesh’s most significant infrastructure projects. The run also served as a symbolic celebration of the airport’s readiness ahead of its inauguration.

Commemorative medals were presented to all participants who completed the run. The event created a festive atmosphere at the airport premises, with participants gathering at the terminal and runway areas to mark the occasion.

As part of the programme, the Vizag Runners Society unveiled the launch posters of the Sandhya Marines Vizag Marathon – 5th Edition at the airport terminal. The marathon has emerged as one of the region’s prominent running events, attracting participants from across the country.

The event was flagged off by GMR Aero officials, including Kanwarbir Singh Kalra, M. Koteswara Rao, and GUG Sastry, among others. They appreciated the efforts of the organisers in bringing together the running community and highlighting the growing importance of the Bhogapuram International Airport.

The organisers said the event’s success demonstrated Vizag’s vibrant fitness culture and generated excitement around the inauguration of the new airport, which is expected to enhance air connectivity and support the region’s economic growth.
