VIMS commissions 50 kW rooftop solar plant under CER initiative

The Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) on Saturday commissioned a 50 kW on-grid rooftop solar power plant, boosting its renewable energy capacity and reducing its reliance on conventional power sources.

The project was set up by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Pvt. Ltd. (AM/NS India) under its Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) initiative, with support from the Visakhapatnam district administration.

The facility was inaugurated in the presence of VIMS Director V. Manmadha Rao and AM/NS India (Vizag Steel) Executive Director M. Ravindranath.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Manmatha Rao said the newly commissioned solar plant was expected to generate around 6,000 units of electricity every month, helping the hospital save nearly ₹50,000 in monthly power bills. The initiative would not only reduce the hospital’s electricity expenditure but also contribute to environmental conservation, he said.

VIMS already has rooftop solar installations with a combined capacity of 220 kW. With the addition of the new 50 kW plant, the hospital’s total installed solar capacity has increased to 270 kW.

Mr. Ravindranath said AM/NS India would install another 50 kW rooftop solar plant at VIMS in the near future. The company would continue to support environmentally sustainable initiatives through its Corporate Environmental Responsibility programme, he added.

Among those present were VIMS Deputy Director (Administration) Srinivas Kumar, Hospital Administrator Dr. Manoj Kumar, AM/NS India Head (HR, IR and Administration) D.S. Varma, E. Sitarami Reddy, A.V. Subrahmanyam, Nursing Superintendent Swarnalatha, doctors and other members of the hospital staff.
