10-kg composite LPG cylinders introduced for consumers

Consumers can now opt for 10-kg composite LPG cylinders supplied by oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum.

The composite cylinders, which weigh nearly half as much as conventional 14.2-kg iron cylinders, are designed to offer greater ease of handling and transportation. Their transparent body allows consumers to check the remaining LPG quantity in the cylinder and plan refills accordingly.

According to LPG distributors, the cylinders are made of composite fibre and have a three-layer construction intended to enhance their strength and durability. The material is also less likely to leave stains on kitchen floors.

The 10-kg cylinders are expected to be of use to bachelors, small families, traders and other consumers with relatively low LPG requirements.

Switching from conventional cylinders

Consumers with existing 14.2-kg LPG connections can approach their respective gas agencies to switch to a 10-kg composite cylinder by paying the applicable difference in the security deposit.

Refills can be booked through the mobile applications of the respective oil marketing companies. Consumers can also use the official WhatsApp and SMS services linked to their registered mobile numbers.

Those seeking new connections can approach their local LPG distributors and apply for a composite cylinder. Non-subsidised and Free Trade LPG (FTL) options are also available.

Distributors said a consumer could obtain a composite LPG cylinder by submitting identity proof, even without an address document, subject to the applicable rules.

The 10-kg composite cylinder costs about ₹3,000 to ₹3,500, while a refill is expected to cost around ₹650 to ₹700.
