AP to roll out smart LED streetlights across 123 ULBs
Andhra Pradesh is set to get the country’s first integrated smart LED streetlighting network, with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Union Ministry of Power, planning to replace nearly 10.5 lakh streetlights across all 123 urban local bodies (ULBs) with AI-enabled, individually monitored LED lights.
EESL will implement the project in partnership with the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department.
EESL will sign a tripartite agreement with the CDMA and the respective ULBs for rolling out the project across the State. Around 7.5 lakh streetlights will be replaced in the first phase, while another three lakh lights will be covered under the expanded scope.
Each streetlight will be equipped with an Individual Light Monitoring (ILM) controller, allowing authorities to remotely switch lights on and off, monitor energy consumption, detect faults and undertake predictive maintenance.
The ILM network will be connected to a centralised control and monitoring system with GIS-based asset management, automated alerts, performance analytics, remote operation and comprehensive reporting facilities.
Officials said the initiative would mark the next generation of the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) by combining energy-efficient LED technology with intelligent controls, real-time monitoring and digital asset management.
EESL has already replaced more than 1.3 crore conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED systems under the SLNP across the country. The programme is among the world’s largest public lighting energy-efficiency initiatives.
Preparations for the Andhra Pradesh rollout were reviewed at a virtual meeting attended by MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar, CDMA P. Sampath Kumar, AP Genco and APSEEDCO Managing Director S. Naga Lakshmi, and EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit.
Suresh Kumar said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had laid special emphasis on safeguarding public interest in implementing the LED streetlighting programme. “Accordingly, the project has been designed with transparency, accountability and efficient utilisation of public resources as its core principles,” he said.
Sampath Kumar said the State government had honoured the memorandum of understanding signed with EESL in the presence of MA&UD Minister P. Narayana.
He said high-level review meetings with commissioners of regional ULBs would be held from August 11 to 14 to discuss implementation of the enhanced energy-efficient smart LED streetlighting project.
EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit assured the State government that the organisation would make every effort to complete the project within the stipulated timeline.
He said the initiative would set a national benchmark for smart and energy-efficient urban streetlighting, while improving the delivery of public services and the quality of life in cities.
