Visakhapatnam resorts face scrutiny over alleged regulatory violations
Resorts and guesthouses on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam have come under scrutiny following allegations that some establishments are operating without mandatory statutory approvals and violating other regulations.
The properties under scrutiny are located in areas including Sagarnagar, Yendada, Kapuluppada, Rushikonda, Nerellavalasa, Bheemili and Anandapuram. Some establishments are also reportedly advertising rooms for short-duration stays on social media.
The concerns have gained attention following two incidents linked to birthday celebrations at resorts. About three months ago, a young woman from Arilova reportedly died after attending a birthday party at a resort in Yendada. More recently, a dispute during a birthday celebration at a resort in Gandigundam, in Anandapuram mandal, raised questions about activities at such establishments.
Residents have also alleged that some resorts serve liquor without the required permissions and allow loud music and DJ programmes to continue late into the night. There are also unverified allegations of gambling at some properties.
Social media advertisements by some establishments reportedly offer rooms on an hourly basis, with rates of around ₹1,000 per hour, including air-conditioning.
Under applicable regulations, resorts are required to obtain relevant approvals, which may include municipal trade licences, sanctioned building plans and occupancy certificates. Depending on their operations, establishments may also require clearances from the Fire Department, Pollution Control Board and electrical authorities, as well as registrations relating to labour, GST and professional tax.
Resorts serving liquor must obtain the required Excise Department licence. Additional permissions may apply to events involving alcohol and the commercial use of copyrighted music.
Establishments are also expected to maintain guest records, including identification details, and install CCTV cameras as required.
Officials from the police, municipal administration, Excise Department, Fire Department and other agencies have been urged to conduct coordinated inspections and verify whether the resorts comply with statutory requirements. Action should be taken wherever violations are established.
