Andhra youth brimming with talent, says Lokesh
HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh said energy, talent, and determination are deeply rooted in Andhra Pradesh’s youth, and assured that the government will extend full support to sports development.
He was addressing the National Sports Day programme organised by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) at the Andhra University Convention Hall on Friday, marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand and Telugu language reformer Gidugu Ramamurthy.
Mr. Lokesh said the government is committed to promoting sports in a structured way. “Nearly 24,000 youngsters took part in ten different sports, with 462 emerging as winners at the State level. Andhra Pradesh has the potential to become a sports capital not only for India but also on the global stage,” he said.
He emphasized the need for grassroots initiatives to divert children from digital distractions, and pointed to reforms such as introducing a no-bag day every Saturday to promote life skills and sports. He also highlighted the role of private companies like JSW and GMR in supporting the cause and said the State will provide modern infrastructure to athletes.
“Sports is not just about medals but also about health, social integration, and discipline. Perseverance and hard work are essential to success, and we want to nurture that culture across Andhra Pradesh,” the Minister added.
On the occasion, Mr. Lokesh felicitated noted sportspersons P. Gopichand, MSK Prasad, and Koneru Humpy, along with achievers in various disciplines such as Saket Sai Myneni, Yarraji Jyothi, and E. Rajini.
