Anakapalli police facilitate parole for detainee to attend son’s funeral

The Anakapalli district police facilitated the one-day temporary release of a detainee lodged in Visakhapatnam Central Jail under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, enabling him to attend his son’s funeral in Jampena village of V. Madugula mandal on Wednesday.

According to the police, Pechheti Raju alias Mahalakshmi Naidu was detained under the PIT NDPS Act on January 12 this year in connection with a ganja trafficking case and has since been lodged in the Central Jail.

The request for temporary release arose after Raju’s elder son, Sai Kiran (17), was killed in a road accident on May 31. The family had earlier lost another son, Jitendra, to illness three years ago.

Following representations from family members and village elders, V. Madugula Sub-Inspector Narayana Rao and K. Kotapadu Circle Inspector Krishna brought the matter to the attention of Anakapalli Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha and Additional Superintendent of Police L. Mohana Rao.

Taking into account the humanitarian circumstances, the district police initiated the required procedure and submitted a report to the State government seeking temporary parole for the detainee.

Acting on the recommendation, the Revenue and Excise Department issued an order on June 2 permitting Raju’s release for a day to attend his son’s funeral and perform the last rites. Raju was brought to Jampena village under police escort and participated in the funeral rites on Tuesday.

Family members and residents of the village expressed gratitude to the district police and government authorities for facilitating the temporary release, which enabled the bereaved father to bid a final farewell to his son.
