Constitution remains democracy’s guiding force, says CJ Thakur

High Court Chief Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur on Monday said the Constitution has served as the bedrock of Indian democracy and a continuing source of guidance for the judiciary since its adoption in 1950.

After unfurling the national flag at the High Court to mark the 77th Republic Day, the Chief Justice said the Constitution not only lays down the framework of governance but also protects the rights and dignity of citizens. The strength of India’s democracy, he said, lies in adherence to constitutional values in both letter and spirit.

Addressing the legal fraternity, Justice Thakur said the rule of law, equal treatment of citizens, protection of civil liberties and primacy of public interest form the core of the democratic system. These principles ensure that institutions remain accountable and responsive to the people, he added.

He described the judiciary as an agent of social change and a guardian of civil rights, noting that courts play a key role in securing justice for the marginalised and maintaining balance in the federal structure. By interpreting the Constitution and safeguarding fundamental rights, the judiciary reinforces democratic institutions and public confidence, he said.

Stressing the role of citizens, the Chief Justice said upholding constitutional values in everyday life is a shared responsibility. Respect for diversity, commitment to equality and faith in the rule of law are vital to preserving national unity and democratic character, he observed.

Despite various challenges, India continues to remain committed to participatory democracy, Justice Thakur said, urging people to protect the country’s social fabric and work towards collective progress.

He also expressed confidence in the youth, saying their energy, innovation and sense of responsibility would guide the nation towards a more inclusive and progressive future.

Additional Solicitor General Challa Dhanunjay, Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, Bar Council Chairman N. Dwarakanath Reddy and High Court Advocates’ Association vice-president K.V. Raghuveer were among those who addressed the gathering.

Judges, advocates and court staff attended the function.
