GITAM opens Schwan Lab for biomedical engineering
GITAM School of Core Engineering (GSCE) has inaugurated the Schwan Lab at its Visakhapatnam campus, strengthening hands-on learning and fostering advanced research in biomedical engineering.
Prof. P. Bharani Chandra Kumar, Director, GSCE, inaugurated the facility on Monday in the presence of Dr. I. Sarat Babu, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, faculty members and students.
The laboratory is equipped with BIOPAC systems for ECG, EEG and EMG analysis, a Noraxon EMG and gait analysis platform, surgical diathermy training units, haemodialysis demonstration systems, non-invasive ventilators, pulmonary function test spirometers, syringe pumps and defibrillator simulators.
The facility will support GITAM’s B.Tech programme in Biomedical Engineering, which integrates biology, medicine and engineering, with focus areas including medical imaging, BioMEMS, biomaterials and medical robotics.
GITAM is also enhancing clinical and industry exposure for its students through its association with GIMSR Medical College and proposed MoUs with the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), Vijaya Diagnostics, and Texas A&M University.
Students also gain hands-on experience through internships and training at institutions such as Apollo Hospitals, Pinnacle Hospital, and AMTZ, gaining exposure to medical device design and testing as well as real-world clinical practices.
The institution said the new facility, along with clinical and industry training, would help prepare students for careers and research in the medical technology and healthcare sectors.
