GVMC drafts long-term water security plan for Vizag

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has launched an ambitious initiative to secure the city’s long-term water needs by preparing a comprehensive Water Security Plan with support from global agencies such as the International Finance Corporation, Singapore Water Centre, PUB Singapore and ISF Australia.

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said the plan will scientifically assess existing water sources, forecast future demand and address climate-related challenges.

Observing World Water Day, the Commissioner said the strategy will prioritise water conservation, wastewater treatment and reuse, groundwater protection and strengthening of supply systems by reducing non-revenue water through advanced technology and data-driven methods.

Under the ‘Drink from Tap’ programme, aligned with the AMRUT 2.0 Mission, GVMC aims to provide 24×7 safe drinking water to households. The initiative uses SCADA systems and automated Water Treatment Plants to ensure continuous monitoring and efficient distribution.

The city’s current water demand is around 400 million litres per day (MLD), which is projected to rise to 726 MLD by 2047 as Visakhapatnam grows into a major industrial and economic centre.

To ensure quality, GVMC has enhanced testing and monitoring by deploying mobile laboratories for real-time analysis before and after treatment. Meanwhile, rejuvenation of 10 water bodies is underway under the XV Finance Commission and AMRUT 2.0 to improve groundwater recharge and urban aesthetics.

Referring to this year’s theme, ‘Water and Gender’, Garg highlighted the crucial role of women in water management at both household and community levels, stressing their importance in achieving sustainable water practices.
