Helmet, Seat Belt Use Key to Curb Road Accidents: Vizianagaram SP

Superintendent of Police A.R. Damodar on Monday urged motorists to follow basic safety norms such as wearing helmets and fastening seat belts. He said simple precautions can prevent a majority of road accident fatalities.

Raising concern over road safety, Mr. Damodar said the district police have identified nearly 20 accident-prone locations, or black spots, where frequent mishaps occur. The department has begun targeted measures at these stretches to reduce risks and improve traffic flow.

As part of the drive, the SP visited key areas in Vizianagaram town and its outskirts. He interacted with commuters, residents, and shopkeepers to understand ground-level issues, traffic patterns, and risky behaviour. He also invited public suggestions to improve safety and enforcement.

Mr. Damodar said the police are implementing a mix of engineering and enforcement measures. Teams have installed speed breakers, reflective blinkers, road stoppers, and radium signage at vulnerable junctions. These steps aim to improve visibility and regulate vehicle movement, especially at night. Officials have taken up these works at Aainda, Modavalasa, Chelluru bypass road, and near the 5th Battalion gate.

He added that the department plans to consult engineering experts for a scientific assessment of black spots. “We are analysing the causes of accidents at each location, including poor road design, lack of signage, over-speeding and human error. We will take corrective steps in coordination with other departments,” he said.

The SP said the police will intensify awareness campaigns along with enforcement drives to promote responsible driving. Teams will focus on educating youth and two-wheeler riders about helmet use. Police will also continue strict checks on speeding, drunken driving, and seat belt violations.

Reiterating that road safety is a shared responsibility, Mr. Damodar urged the public to cooperate with the police and follow traffic rules to prevent avoidable loss of life.
