Mother’s Day Brings Families Together in Visakhapatnam

Mother’s Day was observed across Visakhapatnam on Sunday with various programmes and community events organised to honour the love, sacrifices and contributions of mothers.

Schools conducted cultural performances, storytelling sessions and interactive activities involving students and parents. Educationists said such initiatives were increasingly being used to nurture values such as empathy, gratitude and respect among children.

“Children develop social and emotional values through active participation in these programmes. Schools are integrating such activities into a broader framework of holistic learning,” said academic counsellor Prof. V. Radhika.

Restaurants and hospitality establishments across the city witnessed increased footfall as families gathered for special meals to mark the occasion. Sweet shops and gift outlets also reported brisk business during the weekend.

Mental health experts observed that such occasions were gaining importance in the context of demanding urban lifestyles and reduced opportunities for family interaction.

“Occasions such as Mother’s Day offer families an opportunity to spend quality time together and recognise the emotional contributions of mothers within the family,” said Visakhapatnam-based psychologist Dr. K. Suneetha.

Women’s organisations and NGOs working in the field of child welfare stressed the need to look beyond celebrations and focus on issues such as maternal health, emotional support systems and work-life balance for women.

Organisers noted that Visakhapatnam had witnessed increasing public participation in community-based cultural and social events in recent years, reflecting changing urban social trends and growing interest in family-oriented initiatives.
