Tirumala Kalyana Vedika sees rise in free weddings
Couples are increasingly choosing the Tirumala Kalyana Vedika to begin married life in a sacred setting. Many are opting for the free marriage facility offered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). TTD opened the venue on Papavinasanam Road on April 25, 2016. Since then, it has drawn devotees from across the country. TTD data show that 26,777 marriages took place at the venue up to December 31, 2025.
“More couples are coming forward every year,” a TTD official said. “They trust the temple administration and prefer Tirumala for its spiritual atmosphere.”
TTD offers several services free of cost. It provides a priest, mangala vadyam, and ceremonial items like turmeric, kumkum, and sacred threads. Couples must bring other materials required for the rituals. TTD requires the presence of the parents of both the bride and groom. “If parents cannot attend, couples must submit supporting documents,” an official said.
After the wedding, the couple and their parents can avail of Srivari darshan facilities. Under a Rs 300 special entry ticket, up to six members can enter through the ATC queue line. TTD also issues free laddus based on the marriage receipt.
TTD launched an online booking system on May 9, 2016. Couples can book a wedding slot through the official website. They must upload Aadhaar and age-proof documents.
TTD allows weddings only for Hindu couples. The bride must be at least 18 years old, and the groom must be at least 21. TTD conducts only first marriages at the venue. “We do not conduct second marriages or love marriages here,” an official said.
The State government has set up a Hindu Marriage Sub-Registrar office at the venue. It allows couples to register their marriage on the spot. The office works from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Marriage numbers rose steadily over the years. The pandemic caused a sharp fall. Only 91 weddings took place in 2020–21. TTD has urged eligible couples to use the facility and begin married life in the presence of Lord Venkateswara.
