Visakhapatnam Oncologist Dr. Leela Digumarti Appointed to Global Cancer Prevention Committee
Renowned gynecological oncologist Dr. Leela Digumarti has been invited to join the Training and Education Committee of the International Federation for Cancer Prevention and Colposcopy (IFCPC). The IFCPC is the premier global authority dedicated to setting international standards for cervical cancer prevention, diagnosis, and management.
Dr. Leela will serve an initial three-year term, during which she will help develop and roll out the federation’s global training initiatives. This includes managing OSCE examinations and leading “Training the Trainers” programmes.
“It is an honour to join the IFCPC Training and Education Committee,” Dr. Leela stated. “Strengthening structured education in colposcopy and cervical cancer prevention is absolutely vital to improving patient outcomes worldwide.”
This global recognition stems from her decade-long dedication to medical education in India. Notably, she championed the formal training framework under the Indian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ISCCP), significantly boosting nationwide capacity for colposcopy training.
“When I first launched the training programme in India, the goal was simple: create a structured pathway to standardize clinical skills and catch cervical disease early,” she reflected.
As the apex international body, the IFCPC establishes global guidelines for both clinicians and nurses specializing in colposcopy—the evaluation of cervical changes caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The federation also steers benchmarks for HPV vaccine protocols and laboratory standards. Dr. Leela’s appointment highlights her profound impact on advancing cancer screening education both at home and abroad.
