Teachers’ Day Celebrated at GITAM University, Visakhapatnam

GITAM Deemed to be University celebrated Teachers’ Day with enthusiasm at its Visakhapatnam campus on Thursday, recognising the vital role of educators in shaping future generations in an era influenced by artificial intelligence.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eroll D’Souza spoke about the transformation of Indian education. He noted the shift from a values- and discipline-driven system in the 1970s to today’s focus on skills and technology. He said teachers continue to be the backbone of holistic education by inspiring curiosity, fostering ethics, and supporting the emotional and social growth of students. “As mentors and guides, they shape not only academic success but also well-rounded individuals prepared for a technology-driven society,” he said.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Y. Gowthama Rao highlighted the role of teachers in strengthening societal values. “By serving as role models, they instill values through their actions and guidance, promoting character development and civic engagement,” he said. He urged faculty members to embrace lifelong learning to meet the evolving aspirations of students.

The celebrations also honoured the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Floral tributes were offered at his statue on campus, and his legacy as a philosopher and educationist was remembered.

On the occasion, Dr. A. Jayashree received the Best Teacher Award, while P. Gurumurthy was honoured with the Best Supporting Staff Award.

The programme saw participation from GIMSR Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. B. Geetanjali, Registrar Prof. D. Gunasekharan, senior faculty members, staff, and students, reflecting the respect the academic community holds for its educators.
