GITAM raises mental health awareness on World Mental Health Day

“Early identification and timely treatment are crucial for managing mental health disorders. People must overcome stigma and seek help without delay,” said Dr. Sri Krishna, Head of Psychiatry at GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR), while addressing students on World Mental Health Day.

He stressed that mental health is as important as physical health. He urged students to notice symptoms in themselves and others.

The Psychiatry Department at GIMSR held awareness sessions and community outreach programs. The events aimed to educate students and the public on mental health, early intervention, and reducing stigma.

Dr. Krishna said over 200 million adults in India live with mental health issues. One in seven adolescents is affected. These numbers have risen since the COVID-19 pandemic due to stress, isolation, and lifestyle changes.

Citing the National Mental Health Survey, he said depression, anxiety, and addiction disorders—including alcohol, smoking, and cannabis use—are most common. He noted that 80 to 90 per cent of affected individuals do not get proper care.

Educational sessions for college students focused on stress management and early intervention. Dr. Niveditha Vasireddy and Ms. Savy Chawla spoke to physiotherapy students about common stressors. They encouraged students to seek support.

A community program at Bheemili Community Health Centre helped residents recognize depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Dr. Ramya Spandana and Dr. Geethanjali explained outpatient, inpatient, and psychological services available at GITAM Hospital for all age groups.
