India Post to Resume Mail Services to U.S. from October 15
The Department of Posts on Tuesday announced that all international postal services from India to the United States will resume from October 15, 2025. The services were suspended on August 22 following an executive order by the U.S. administration that withdrew the “de minimis” treatment for postal shipments.
A senior postal official said the suspension was necessary to meet new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rules requiring advance collection and remittance of import duties.
“We had to align with the new regulatory framework to ensure full compliance with U.S. customs requirements,” the official said. “After extensive trials and system upgrades, India Post is now ready to resume all services.”
To meet CBP requirements, India Post has introduced a Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) system that allows customs duties to be collected in India at the time of booking and remitted directly to CBP through approved Qualified Parties.
“This mechanism ensures faster customs clearance and seamless delivery of parcels to the U.S. without any additional duty or delay,” the department said.
As per CBP guidelines, postal shipments from India to the U.S. will attract a flat 50 per cent customs duty on the declared FOB value under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff. Unlike commercial consignments, no additional product-specific duties will apply.
Officials said the simplified structure would benefit MSMEs, artisans, small traders, and e-commerce exporters, making the postal route an affordable and competitive option for shipments to the U.S.
India Post clarified that no additional charges will be levied for DDP services. Existing postal tariffs will remain unchanged.
Customers can now send EMS, Air Parcels, Registered Letters/Packets, and Tracked Packets to the U.S. from any Post Office, International Business Centre (IBC), Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra (DNK), or through www.indiapost.gov.in.
“This initiative supports Make in India, One District One Product (ODOP), and Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras by providing compliant and affordable logistics for exporters,” the department said. The resumption marks a key step in strengthening India’s international logistics network and reinforcing India Post’s role in facilitating export-led growth.
