Collector urges solar power installation under PM Surya Ghar scheme

District Collector M.N. Harendira Prasad on Saturday called for greater awareness of the PM Surya Ghar scheme and urged residents to install solar power units in every household. He held a review meeting at the Collectorate to assess the scheme’s progress.

“The district aims to install 70,000 PM Surya Ghar units in the next two months,” the Collector said. “Each constituency should target 10,000 units. Many residents are still unaware of the scheme, so officials and SHG women must educate the public.”

He directed authorities to provide information on unit costs, government subsidies, bank loans, GST reductions, and potential savings on electricity bills. “Set targets for each secretariat and ensure completion. Village ward secretaries who assist will receive incentives,” he added. “All residents are eligible for this scheme.”

APEPDCL S.E. Shyambabu explained the costs and benefits. “A one-kilowatt unit costs Rs 65,000, with a Rs 30,000 subsidy, and can generate up to 150 units. It requires a 10×10 feet space on the rooftop or open ground. A two-kilowatt unit costs up to Rs 1,25,000, with a Rs 60,000 subsidy, generating 240 units,” he said.

Shyambabu said residents can use the electricity they generate, and the government will buy any surplus at Rs 2.09 per unit. “Bank loans are available at six percent interest. Once installed, these units can eliminate electricity bills,” he added.

The meeting was attended by Joint Collector K. Mayur Ashok, Zilla Parishad CEO Narayana Murthy, GSWS District Officer Usharani, Zonal Commissioners, Tahsildars, MPDOs, and UCD officials.
