GVMC plans constructed wetlands to tackle sewage at YMCA Beach

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is considering the installation of constructed wetlands—engineered systems that mimic natural wetlands—to reduce sewage discharge into beach waters. A pilot project is expected near YMCA Beach.

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, along with officials and environmental experts, including Prof. S. Ramakrishna Rao (Retd.) and Prof. S. Bala Prasad of Andhra University, inspected drains discharging into the city’s beaches on Sunday (October 26, 2025). The inspection began near Jagannath Swamy Temple at the All India Radio (AIR) Junction and continued to the YMCA Beach outfall.

The experts recommended establishing a constructed wetland at YMCA Beach as a pilot and extending similar systems to other drains along the coastline for long-term impact.

Commissioner Garg said the corporation is taking “firm measures” to find a permanent solution to sewage discharge. He has asked Executive Engineer Yedukondalu to prepare proposals based on the inspection.

During the visit, Garg also checked the YMCA drain’s screens and sewage flow system, directing Assistant Engineers to monitor drains regularly to prevent blockages.

A large heap of garbage outside a shop in the YMCA Beach parking area drew his attention. The shopkeeper was fined Rs 5,000 on the spot for poor sanitation. Garg warned that while the beach attracts large crowds, irresponsible dumping by some traders spoils cleanliness and ambience. He instructed officials to enforce fines and, if necessary, remove non-compliant shops.

The Commissioner also asked Chief Medical Officer Dr. E.N.V. Naresh Kumar and Zonal Commissioner Shivaprasad to ensure regular sanitation drives at beaches and across the city.
