Waltair Division Breaks Freight Loading Record

Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra commended the Traffic Department and all associated teams of the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway (ECoR) for their outstanding dedication and coordination in managing an unprecedented 50 million tonnes (MT) of freight in just 230 days.

“Teamwork and efficient coordination have made this record-breaking performance possible,” he stated, emphasizing how operational, commercial, and logistics teams collaborated seamlessly.

This achievement marks a 12.5% increase compared to the same period last year and surpasses the division’s previous record of 50 MT in 256 days during 2023–24. As a result, the Waltair Division has risen to the fifth position among Indian Railways’ top-performing divisions, up from sixth last year. This reflects its ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, optimize freight handling, and meet growing industrial demand.

In October 2025, the division recorded a monthly freight loading of 7.10 MT, the highest in its history. K. Pavan Kumar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Waltair, attributed this growth to upgraded traffic facilities, timely availability of rakes, and efficient customer resource allocation. Strategic loading points—such as Vizag Port, Gangavaram Port, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, HPCL, Utkal Alumina, and NMDC—played a crucial role, highlighting the division’s vital support for regional industries and trade.

In recent years, the Waltair Division has implemented a series of initiatives to modernize infrastructure, reduce turnaround times, and expand freight-handling capacity. These measures have not only improved operational efficiency but also strengthened the division’s position as a key freight hub on the eastern coast.

With freight volumes continuing to rise, the division is now focusing on long-term strategies, including advanced tracking systems, digital scheduling, and customer-centric logistics solutions. These efforts aim to sustain growth and maintain timely service. Industry stakeholders have welcomed these developments, noting that efficient freight movement from ports and industrial centers is essential for driving regional economic growth.
