Visakha Utsav 2026 kicks off with grand cultural show, tourism push

Visakha Utsav 2026 opened on a grand and colorful note on Saturday, transforming the coastal city into a vibrant cultural hub as thousands turned out for the inaugural celebrations, marked by a large-scale carnival, folk performances, and a renewed focus on tourism promotion.

The festival opened with a spectacular procession that showcased the cultural heritage of Uttarandhra. Traditional art forms such as Tappeta Gullu, Puli Veshalu, and Dhimsa, along with lively tribal dances, set the tone for the festivities. Artisans, athletes, youth groups, public representatives, and citizens participated enthusiastically, creating a strong community presence.

Home Minister V. Anitha, Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, and Minister Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy flagged off the carnival at the GVMC Aqua Sports Complex. State TDP president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, along with other legislators and senior officials, attended the event. The procession followed the Kali Matha Temple route and concluded at Gokul Park.

A major stage was erected at R.K. Beach for the main programme, which drew large crowds along Beach Road. Television anchor Suma hosted the inaugural event, adding energy to the proceedings.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Durgesh said the tourism sector had witnessed a strong revival and that the government was giving high priority to tourism-led development. He cited the successful organisation of multiple festivals over the past year, including the Flamingo Festival and Avakai Amaravathi, as part of efforts to position Andhra Pradesh as a major tourist destination.

The weekend timing of the event led to a heavy turnout, with cultural programmes featuring local talent keeping the audience engaged. The evening’s highlight was a musical performance by playback singer Sunitha, which drew enthusiastic applause.

Food stalls, handicraft counters, and displays of local products lined Beach Road, while dedicated play zones and games were arranged for children, making the event family-friendly.

Earlier in the day, helicopter joyrides were launched at Rushikonda Beach as part of the festival, offering visitors an aerial view of the coastline and adding a new attraction to the celebrations.
