INSV Kaundinya returns to Mumbai after Oman voyage

The Indian Navy will flag in the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Kaundinya at Mumbai Harbour on March 2. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth will lead the ceremony. The event marks the vessel’s first overseas voyage to Oman and its return across the Arabian Sea.

The Navy said the mission highlights India’s maritime heritage and long-standing links with Oman. The journey followed ancient sea routes used by Indian mariners. It also showcased centuries of trade and cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean.

INSV Kaundinya uses a traditional stitched-ship design. Artisans hand-stitched wooden planks with coir rope and sealed them with natural resins. The design comes from a 5th-century CE image in the Ajanta Caves. The Navy worked with traditional craftsmen and validated the vessel with modern naval standards.

The vessel sailed from Porbandar on December 29, 2025. It reached Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat on January 14, 2026. Omani dignitaries and members of the Indian diaspora welcomed the crew. Visitors toured the ship during its stay. The vessel served as a symbol of maritime heritage and cultural diplomacy.

The Navy named the ship after the legendary mariner Kaundinya. Officials said the expedition reflects India’s long tradition of oceanic navigation and outreach. They added that the mission also shows the Navy’s role as a custodian of the country’s civilisational maritime legacy.

The flag-in at Mumbai will conclude the project. Officials said the effort underlines India’s focus on maritime outreach, cultural diplomacy, and the preservation of traditional nautical knowledge.
