KGH to get new Critical Care Block for emergency patients
Patients arriving at King George Hospital (KGH) in critical condition will soon receive better care with the opening of a new Critical Care Block. The central government, under the Ayushman Bharat programme, has approved Critical Care Blocks for medical colleges nationwide. Accordingly, Andhra Medical College has allocated ₹23.75 crore to KGH, including ₹7.12 crore to buy advanced medical equipment.
Construction of the block, located near the mortuary, began a few months ago and is now nearing completion. Meanwhile, hospital authorities have started procuring essential equipment. Superintendent Dr. I. Vani said the block should become operational by the second week of April.
The facility will offer 50 beds across departments that handle high emergency caseloads, including Emergency, General Surgery, General Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Paediatrics, and Gynaecology. About 60 nurses will staff the block, and recruitment is underway to fill current vacancies.
Currently, emergency patients are treated in the Casualty and Emergency Medicine departments before moving to specialized units. Once the new block opens, critically ill patients from any department will receive care there directly, with doctors and staff available 24/7.
The block will treat road accident victims, stroke patients, snake bite cases, respiratory emergencies, and other severe conditions. It will feature modern ventilators, ICU machines, and diagnostic devices, allowing all tests to be conducted on-site. Dr. Vani added that the block will become a central hub for critical care at KGH. The inauguration is expected to be led by Minister Satyakumar Yadav.
