VPA begins annual dredging to preserve R.K. Beach

Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has commenced its annual maintenance dredging at the New Sand Trap (NST) and other critical operational areas of the port, including OHTB, OB-1, OB-2, MPB, IC, and IHTB. The initiative forms part of the port authority’s ongoing efforts to control coastal erosion and maintain navigational safety.

The three-year project, valued at Rs. 82.98 crore, involves the removal of 2.5 lakh cubic meters of silt each year. The dredged material will be pumped ashore to nourish beaches, including the iconic Rama Krishna Beach. Each year’s operations are scheduled to be completed within 45 weather-permitting days.

The first phase of the dredging programme for 2025-26 began on 10 March 2026, with the deployment of the Dredging Corporation of India’s vessel DREDGE XXI. The project is planned to continue through the fiscal years 2026-27 and 2027-28, ensuring a sustained effort to protect both port infrastructure and nearby shorelines.

Dr. Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, Chairperson of VPA and DCIL, emphasised the significance of the project for coastal conservation. “Visakhapatnam Port Authority is committed to controlling erosion by regularly replenishing Rama Krishna Beach with sand from the outer harbour sand trap. This early intervention is vital to preserve the beach, and we are working closely with the State Government to safeguard Vizag’s pristine coastline,” he said.

Officials said that, apart from beach nourishment, the dredging also helps maintain safe navigational channels for port operations, reducing the risk of silt-related disruptions. The initiative highlights VPA’s efforts to balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.
