Ghana marks Independence Day at AU campus
The Ghana Students’ Association in India celebrated Ghana’s Independence Day at the campus of Andhra University here on Saturday, bringing together international students, university officials, and members of the academic community. High Commissioner of Ghana to India, Kwasi Obiri-Danso, attended the event as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Obiri-Danso highlighted the strong and longstanding relationship between India and Ghana, particularly in the fields of education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. He appreciated Andhra University for providing a welcoming academic environment to students from Ghana and other countries, and for hosting the celebration that reflected cultural diversity and international friendship.
The High Commissioner expressed pride in seeing Ghanaian students pursuing higher studies at institutions such as Andhra University. He praised the university’s academic standards, infrastructure, and support systems available to international students, noting that such opportunities help strengthen educational ties between the two nations.
AU Vice-Chancellor Rajasekhar said the association between the university and Ghana has gradually evolved into a meaningful academic and cultural partnership. He pointed out that several alumni from Ghana who studied at AU are now serving in prominent and responsible positions in their home country, contributing to national development.
Encouraging students to make the most of their international exposure, Prof. Obiri-Danso urged them to act as a “brain trust” and use the knowledge and global perspective gained during their studies to contribute to the progress of Ghana.
The celebration featured a vibrant cultural fusion programme, including a fashion show by international students and traditional Ghanaian dance performances that captivated the audience. Students also shared cultural experiences, highlighting the spirit of unity and diversity on the campus.
AU Director of International Affairs Paul Douglas, faculty members, students, and members of the Ghanaian student community attended the programme. The event concluded with messages of friendship, cooperation, and continued academic collaboration between the two countries.
