Bhogapuram Airport road links near completion, set to transform North Andhra connectivity

As the launch of Bhogapuram International Airport draws closer, the extensive road network designed to connect the greenfield airport with Visakhapatnam and neighbouring districts is nearing completion. Airport authorities said four key arterial road corridors linking the airport to the city are now 98 per cent complete, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.

The corridors, integrated with the Anakapalli-Anandapuram bypass on National Highway-16, are expected to reduce travel time between Visakhapatnam and the airport to just 45 to 50 minutes. Officials said the roads are likely to be fully operational by July, ensuring seamless access ahead of the airport’s commissioning.

The state government is also focusing on sustainable mobility solutions. Plans are underway to develop EV-enabled corridors and establish charging infrastructure to support environmentally friendly last-mile connectivity for passengers.

Envisioned as a gateway to North Andhra’s economic growth, Bhogapuram International Airport will have an initial capacity to handle six million passengers annually. The facility will also feature a 5 MW solar power plant as part of its commitment to sustainable operations.

Officials believe the project will reshape the development trajectory of Vizianagaram district and the wider region. Vizianagaram Collector S. Ram Sundar Reddy said the airport, located about 30 km from the district headquarters, would improve accessibility and help ease traffic congestion through the upgraded road network.

Industry leaders have welcomed the project, citing its potential to unlock new opportunities in aviation, logistics and commerce.

Dr. G Sambasiva Rao, Vice-Chairman of CII Andhra Pradesh, said the new airport would overcome the operational limitations of the existing military-controlled airport in Visakhapatnam.

“By removing slot constraints, the airport will facilitate round-the-clock international connectivity and significantly strengthen air cargo operations,” Rao said.

He added that the airport would act as a catalyst for growth in tourism, real estate, industrial exports and the MSME sector, while generating substantial employment opportunities, particularly for women.

With connectivity infrastructure entering its final phase and supporting facilities taking shape, Bhogapuram International Airport is poised to emerge as a major aviation hub and a key driver of economic growth in North Andhra Pradesh.
