AP to replace 10.5 lakh streetlights with smart LED system
The Andhra Pradesh government, in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), will implement an Integrated Lighting Management System (ILMS)-based smart street-lighting project across all urban local bodies under the Centre’s Street Lighting National Programme.
The project envisages the replacement of about 10.5 lakh conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED luminaires in two phases, covering 7.5 lakh lights in the first phase and 3 lakh in the second. Officials said the initiative would ensure a minimum 30% reduction in energy consumption, based on actual performance measurements, while lowering maintenance costs.
The smart lighting network will feature centralised monitoring and pole-level control, enabling real-time fault detection, improved service reliability, and accurate verification of energy savings. The government has set a target of completing the project within six months of signing the agreement.
Reviewing the project during a virtual meeting with EESL officials, Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Urban Development) S. Suresh Kumar stressed the need to adhere to the timeline set by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He said the State aimed to emerge as a model for smart and energy-efficient urban infrastructure.
EESL Chief Executive Officer Akhilesh Kumar Dixit said the commercial bid opening for the Andhra Pradesh project was scheduled for June 15 and assured timely implementation. He noted that the national programme had so far generated energy savings of 9,031 million kWh, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 6.2 million tonnes, and delivered substantial economic benefits to urban local bodies across the country.
