VSEZ congratulates Skyroot on successful Vikram-1 launch
The Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone (VSEZ) has congratulated Skyroot Aerospace Private Limited on the successful launch of Vikram-1, India’s first privately built orbital launch vehicle, describing it as a landmark achievement for the country’s private space sector.
VSEZ officials said the Skyroot Aerospace manufacturing unit, established in 2021 at the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park SEZ in Hyderabad, operates under the administrative jurisdiction of VSEZ as part of Mission Aagaman.
Vikram-1 is India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle designed to place small satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Standing about seven storeys tall, the multi-stage rocket features an all-carbon composite structure and is powered by indigenously developed propulsion technologies, including 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid rocket boosters.
The vehicle is designed to carry satellites weighing up to 350 kg into LEO. Its maiden mission aims to deploy payloads into a 450-km orbit at a 60-degree inclination. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the flight-ready Vikram-1 during the inauguration of Skyroot’s Infinity campus in November 2025.
According to VSEZ, the successful launch demonstrates the capability of the Special Economic Zone ecosystem to support globally competitive, high-technology industries through world-class infrastructure, a conducive policy environment, and ease of doing business.
VSEZ said the achievement also highlights its role in facilitating investments in aerospace, defence, electronics, and advanced manufacturing. It added that the success reflects the growing contribution of SEZs to the objectives of the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives while strengthening India’s position as a global hub for high-value manufacturing and innovation.
VSEZ congratulated the entire Skyroot Aerospace team on the achievement and wished the company continued success in advancing India’s commercial space capabilities and enhancing the country’s position in the global space economy.
