Andhra Pradesh Steps Up COVID-19 Surveillance After Fresh Cases

The Andhra Pradesh Health Department has intensified surveillance and preparedness measures following the reporting of fresh COVID-19 cases across the State in recent weeks. Officials, however, said the situation remains under control, and there is no cause for alarm.

According to official data, the State recorded 12 COVID-19 cases and four deaths between June 26 and July 16. The fatalities involved patients with underlying medical conditions, highlighting the continued vulnerability of the elderly and people with comorbidities.

Health officials said the recent cases have been reported from different districts without any identifiable cluster, prompting enhanced surveillance and epidemiological investigations to determine the source and extent of transmission.

Genome sequencing of recent samples confirmed the presence of the Omicron RF.5 sub-variant in four cases. Experts said there is no evidence to suggest that the variant causes more severe illness than previously circulating Omicron lineages. However, they emphasised the need for continued genomic surveillance to monitor the evolution of the virus and detect emerging variants at an early stage.

The Health Department has instructed district authorities to strengthen testing, contact tracing, and monitoring of patients with influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory infections. Hospitals have also been asked to maintain adequate stocks of medicines, oxygen, diagnostic facilities, and isolation infrastructure as a precaution.

Public health experts observed that while COVID-19 no longer poses the level of threat seen during earlier waves of the pandemic, periodic increases in infections are expected as the virus continues to circulate. They stressed that sustained surveillance, timely reporting, and targeted public health measures remain crucial to limiting transmission and protecting high-risk groups.

Officials advised elderly people, immuno-compromised individuals, and those with chronic illnesses to seek medical attention if they develop respiratory symptoms. They reiterated that the State’s healthcare system is equipped to respond to any increase in cases.
