Google to set up Rs 50,000-cr data centre in Vizag, the largest outside U.S.

Tech major Google will establish its first data centre in Visakhapatnam with an investment of Rs 50,000 crore, making it the largest hyperscale facility outside the United States. The 1 gigawatt data centre will power Google Cloud, Search, YouTube and artificial intelligence operations.

The Union Ministry of Industries and Commerce confirmed the development through Invest India on X, describing the decision as a “game changer” that would help India emerge as a global digital hub.

Industry observers say the project will significantly benefit start-ups, enterprises and government services, while also strengthening data security by ensuring Indian user data is stored within the country. To enhance global connectivity, Google will establish landing stations for three submarine cables in Visakhapatnam. With peering and caching servers already operating in Mumbai, integration with these underwater cables is expected to be seamless. The use of dark fibre will further improve cost efficiency.

Cooling requirements have also been factored in. Vizag was chosen for its water resources, which are essential for operating a facility of this scale.

On the employment front, IT experts estimate that an investment of ₹2 crore generates one job. Based on this formula, Google’s investment could create about 25,000 direct jobs and 50,000 indirect jobs in the region.

The company has also committed to running the data centre on renewable energy. About ₹20,000 crore will be invested in electricity projects, including small hydro power initiatives, to ensure sustainable power supply. Similar models are in operation at Google’s U.S. campuses.

The project is expected to boost Andhra Pradesh’s IT ecosystem and reinforce India’s position in the global digital economy.
