DoT delegation reviews 5G lab at GITAM
A delegation of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), led by Special Director-General (Telecom) Deepa Arora, I.T.S., visited the DoT-sponsored 5G Use Case Lab at GITAM Deemed to be University here on Thursday and reviewed its utilisation and ongoing activities.
The delegation interacted with faculty members and students and discussed the scope for expanding academic and research activities based on 5G technology.
Ms. Arora said 100 5G Use Case Labs had been established at academic institutions across the country, including GITAM in Andhra Pradesh. The laboratories were intended to provide students and researchers with access to telecom testing infrastructure and opportunities for experimentation and prototype development.
She said the initiative would contribute to building a 6G-ready ecosystem by developing skills in emerging communication technologies and familiarising students with global telecom standards.
GITAM 5G Use Case Lab in-charge Medara Rambabu briefed the delegation on projects being undertaken at the laboratory in areas such as Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), artificial intelligence and machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT) and autonomous systems.
A low-cost drone developed by students was demonstrated during the visit. The delegation examined the system and interacted with the students involved in its development.
The DoT officials also met Sanchar Mitras associated with GITAM. The volunteers shared their experiences in raising awareness about digital security and Digital India initiatives. The officials distributed Sanchar Mitra kits to the volunteers.
Faculty members and students from various departments of GITAM and Andhra University participated in the programme.
