E-challan checks affecting traffic regulation at Visakhapatnam junctions

Traffic regulation at several busy junctions is reportedly being affected as some traffic police personnel focus on checking pending e-challans and issuing violation notices during peak hours.

Motorists say congestion has worsened with the rise in the number of vehicles, limited road width, and commercial establishments along major roads. Signal violations by motorists are also contributing to traffic problems and accidents.

Traffic personnel are deployed at important junctions to regulate vehicle movement and enforce compliance with traffic signals. Senior officers are expected to monitor traffic conditions during peak hours.

However, motorists allege that some personnel leave their assigned junctions and gather at other locations to check vehicles for pending e-challans. Motorists with outstanding fines are asked to clear the dues through digital payment platforms. Those riding without helmets are also stopped and issued e-challans.

Concerns over traffic management

Motorists say the absence of personnel at busy junctions leaves traffic poorly regulated. They point out that the presence of traffic police encourages compliance with traffic signals, while their absence can lead to violations and accidents.

Personnel assigned to Swarnabharathi Stadium, Spencer’s Junction, Siripuram and Tycoon Junctions are reportedly seen conducting e-challan checks on Race Course Road, opposite the Audi showroom.

Similar complaints have been raised about traffic management at Siripuram Junction, Appughar Junction, Beach Road and Akkayyapalem Junction.

Motorists have urged senior police officials to ensure that personnel remain at their assigned junctions during peak hours and give priority to traffic regulation and road safety.
