GVMC plans dedicated cycling tracks at three locations in the city

Cycling could soon become a safer and more convenient way to travel in Visakhapatnam, with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) proposing dedicated cycling tracks at three locations across the city. The pilot initiative aims to promote sustainable urban mobility, encourage healthier lifestyles, and reduce vehicular pollution.

The civic body plans to assess the outcome of the pilot project before extending similar cycling infrastructure to other parts of the city.

According to GVMC officials, rapid urbanisation and the steady increase in the number of vehicles have contributed to worsening traffic congestion across the city. They said the absence of dedicated cycling infrastructure has also discouraged many residents from using bicycles for fitness and short-distance commuting.

The initiative aligns with the State government’s vision for the development of the Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER), which prioritises environmentally sustainable modes of transport.

Under the pilot project, nearly eight kilometres of cycling tracks will be developed at three locations. A 5.2-km track is being laid around Mudasarlova Park, an 800-metre stretch will come up between Sagar Nagar and Radisson Blu Hotel, and a two-kilometre track will connect Endada with GITAM University.

The project, estimated to cost ₹7 crore, includes dedicated cycling lanes, thermal road markings, lane demarcation, and reflective studs to enhance cyclist safety.

Officials said the locations were selected because they attract a large number of walkers, joggers, and fitness enthusiasts every day. Mudasarlova Park is one of the city’s most popular recreational destinations, while the Sagar Nagar beachfront has become a preferred venue for outdoor exercise.

The GVMC expects the initiative to encourage more residents to take up cycling as a regular form of exercise and a practical option for short-distance travel. The dedicated tracks are also expected to provide tourists with a safe and eco-friendly way to explore Visakhapatnam’s scenic coastline.

Construction of the cycling track around Mudasarlova Park is already underway, while work at the other two locations is expected to commence shortly. Officials said the project will be closely monitored, and similar cycling infrastructure will be developed in other parts of the city if the pilot receives a favourable response.
