GVMC Strengthens RRR Centres Across City
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is planning to strengthen its Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) Centres across the city and step up awareness campaigns to encourage residents to bring unused household items and waste materials for recycling.
The centres, functioning on the concept of a circular economy, are aimed at reducing waste generation by converting discarded materials into reusable and utility products.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg has directed public health officials to improve the functioning of the existing RRR Centres and take measures to increase public participation in the initiative.
Residents can deposit a variety of unused items, including old toys, books, footwear, clothes, plastic items, electronic gadgets, steel products and rubber materials, at the centres located in different wards under the civic body limits.
Officials said the initiative has received a positive response from the public so far. In view of this, the commissioner asked officials to prepare proposals for setting up additional RRR Centres in all zones of the city.
Ketan Garg also stressed the need for extensive awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to contribute to the circular economy model and minimise waste generation.
GVMC officials said efficient utilisation of resources and reduction of waste could be achieved through active public participation in the programme.
Meanwhile, the civic body has intensified action against sanitation violations, including open dumping of waste and hotels failing to hand over garbage to sanitation workers.
Sanitary inspectors have been instructed to monitor violations on a daily basis, while zonal commissioners and other officials will conduct regular field inspections to ensure improved sanitation management and effective door-to-door waste collection from shops and households.
