Two held for cheating jewellery shop owner in Visakhapatnam
Two persons were arrested by the Visakhapatnam City Police in connection with the theft of gold ornaments from a jewellery shop in the Kurupam Market area of Visakhapatnam city.
According to the police, the incident occurred on May 12 at Kausalya Jewellery under the limits of I Town Police Station. The complainant, M. Sudheendar, owner of the jewellery shop, alleged that a woman known to him as a regular customer visited the shop and informed him that her physically disabled relative was waiting in a car outside to purchase ornaments for his daughter’s marriage.
Police identified the accused as Ommi Mangamma alias Manga (39) and Devara Ramakrishna (40), both residents of Seethampeta in the city.
The woman allegedly selected several gold ornaments and requested permission to show them to the relative waiting in the vehicle. Believing her, the shop owner handed over two trays containing the ornaments, following which the accused allegedly fled from the spot.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case in Crime No. 72/2026 under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
A special team constituted under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) traced and apprehended the accused near Mask Junction on VIP Road on May 13, within 24 hours of the registration of the case.
Police recovered gold ornaments weighing about 423 grams and a Pleasure Scooty allegedly used in the commission of the offence.
The police said the accused had allegedly planned the theft due to financial difficulties and used deception to gain the confidence of the jewellery shop owner.
