The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) successfully executed an Animal Exchange Program with Kanpur Zoological Park on the evening of September 2, 2024, bringing several new species to the city’s zoo.

As part of the exchange, IGZP received Swamp Deer, Striped Hyena (for bloodline exchange), Common Sand Boa, Red-crowned Roof Turtle, Hog Deer, Kalij Pheasant, Ruddy Shelduck, and Red Sand Boa from Kanpur. In return, the Visakhapatnam zoo sent Asiatic Wild Dog, Striped Hyena (for bloodline exchange), Indian Wolf, Lutino Parakeet, Star Tortoise, Green Iguana, and Barking Deer to Kanpur.

“This exchange introduces six new species to our collection, enhancing the diversity of attractions for visitors,” said G. Mangamma, Curator of IGZP. “It also strengthens our efforts in wildlife conservation and genetic diversity, which are vital for long-term species survival.”

The new animals will be kept in quarantine following standard protocol before being displayed in their respective enclosures.

IGZP, spread over 625 acres and home to more than 1,200 animals representing over 180 species, has been actively participating in such exchange programs to diversify its collection and support breeding programs. According to the Curator, exchanges like these also provide opportunities for staff to gain expertise in handling different species, enhancing overall zoo management.

“This initiative is not just about adding species to the zoo,” Mangamma added. “It is about educating the public, raising awareness on wildlife conservation, and creating a sustainable model for captive breeding.”

The program underscores IGZP’s commitment to conservation, public education, and international collaboration in wildlife management.
