Visakhapatnam emerges as a hub for advanced prosthetic solutions
From the Jaipur Foot to modern bionic hands, the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) is making advanced medical solutions more accessible. The facility has developed strong capacity for artificial limbs, helping thousands of people with disabilities regain mobility, confidence, and independence.
One of its latest innovations is the “Vizag Hand,” a bionic prosthetic for upper limb amputees. Recently, a woman from Visakhapatnam, who lost her arm in a road accident, received the device. It has opened new possibilities for her daily life and independence.
AMTZ’s impact spans the country. Thousands have received artificial limbs, including low-cost prosthetic joints, myoelectric and bionic upper limbs, and solar-powered wheelchairs. During a recent visit, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India presented artificial legs to several beneficiaries. The myoelectric arm was handed over by the Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command at a joint emergency surgery congress.
Dr. Jitendra Sharma, MD and Founder CEO of AMTZ, said, “The ‘Vizag Hand’ is more than a prosthetic—it is a promise of dignity, resilience, and the legacy of our city having a MedTech Zone.”
The Assistive Technology Centre at AMTZ, supported by ICMR, New Delhi, combines research, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing under one roof. This ensures that customized solutions reach underserved communities. Divyanjan groups nationwide are collaborating with the centre to connect those in need with the Prosthetic Limb Centre.
Led by Amit Sharma, AMTZ continues to offer hope and life-changing solutions to people who rely on artificial limbs and assistive devices.
