GITAM Awards Ph.D. to Dr. T. Sravani for Research on Medicinal Ferns
GITAM (Deemed to be University) has conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmacy to Dr. T. Sravani for her groundbreaking research on medicinal ferns. Her study, carried out under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Partha Roy at the GITAM School of Pharmacy, focused on the aerial parts of Adiantum lunulatum and Polystichum acrostichoides.
Speaking about her work, Dr. Sravani said, “Our research explored the untapped potential of these ferns, long used in traditional medicine. By evaluating their bioactive compounds, we can connect folklore knowledge with modern pharmacology.”
Her findings highlighted the medicinal potential of these ferns, particularly in managing diabetes mellitus, a condition associated with modern lifestyles. She identified key phyto-constituents, including tannins, saponins, alkaloids, phenolics, and flavonoids, which demonstrated antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, gastroprotective, anti-ulcerative, and antipyretic effects.
Prof. Dr. Partha Roy commented, “Dr. Sravani’s research validates the use of traditional medicinal plants. Her work lays the groundwork for plant-based alternatives to synthetic drugs and supports standardisation of herbal medicines.”
The study particularly emphasised Adiantum lunulatum, showing its promising pharmaceutical applications. The research underlines the growing importance of natural product studies in modern pharmacy and herbal medicine.
Dr. Sravani, now Manager of the Technical Department at Botanic Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, continues to integrate modern science with traditional knowledge. GITAM University congratulated her, recognising her significant contributions to pharmaceutical sciences.
