Nara Lokesh lays foundation for Sify’s Rs 1,500 crore AI Edge Data Centre in Visakhapatnam

Minister for IT, Electronics and Communications, Real Time Governance, and Human Resources Development, laid the foundation stone for Visakhapatnam’s first 50 MW AI-powered Edge Data Centre and Open Cable Landing Station (CLS) on Sunday.

Sify Infinit Spaces Limited, a subsidiary of NASDAQ-listed Sify Technologies, will build the project. The company is one of India’s top digital ICT solution providers.

The Andhra Pradesh government has given 3.6 acres of land for the facility. Construction will happen in two phases with an investment of around Rs 1,500 crore. The Edge Data Centre will connect through the OPGW substation and at least two fibre networks. It will support AI-driven businesses and modern digital infrastructure.

The project will create more than 1,000 jobs during construction and operation. Workers will include local talent and technical experts.

The proposed Cable Landing Station will strengthen India’s digital backbone. It will provide undersea cable connectivity and AI computing closer to users. The Vizag CLS will serve as a landing point for submarine cables linking India with Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand. This will allow faster and more reliable data transfer in the region.

“Visakhapatnam is quickly becoming India’s global digital gateway on the eastern coast. Sify’s world-class infrastructure will put Andhra Pradesh on the global technology map. It will also open opportunities for innovation, jobs, and investment,” said Nara Lokesh. “This is just the first step. Approvals for a mega data centre are already in place. This marks an important moment in the state’s digital journey.”

Raju Vegesna, Chairman of Sify Technologies, said, “We are proud to help Visakhapatnam become a hub for global connectivity and digital infrastructure. This is the start of our long-term plan to strengthen India’s digital economy and drive AI-led innovation.”

The facility will make Visakhapatnam a major digital and connectivity hub on India’s eastern coast. It supports Andhra Pradesh’s goal to attract next-generation data and AI-driven industries.
