India, Indonesia Launch Fifth Edition of ‘Samudra Shakti 2025’ Naval Exercise
The Indian Navy has begun the fifth edition of the Indo-Indonesian Joint Bilateral Maritime Exercise, ‘Samudra Shakti – 2025,’ which will continue until October 17. The exercise strengthens bilateral cooperation, enhances interoperability, and underscores the commitment of both nations to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
India is represented by INS Kavaratti, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette under the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), while Indonesia is participating with KRI John Lie, a helicopter-equipped corvette that recently arrived in Visakhapatnam. The visit marks another milestone in the growing naval partnership between the two countries.
The harbour phase will focus on fostering professional rapport and camaraderie among personnel. Activities include cross-deck visits, joint yoga sessions, friendly sports fixtures, and Professional Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE) to share knowledge and best practices.
The sea phase will involve complex maritime operations designed to improve tactical coordination. Exercises will include helicopter operations, air defence drills, weapon firing, and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) drills, simulating real-world maritime security scenarios. These operations aim to strengthen the ability of both navies to conduct joint missions effectively.
Since its inception, ‘Samudra Shakti’ has become a key platform for enhancing mutual understanding, sharing operational expertise, and building trust between India and Indonesia. Officials say the exercise also provides a framework for addressing emerging maritime challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing, and disaster response, while reinforcing regional security.
