Rushikonda Hills redevelopment draws sharp public criticism

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority’s call for suggestions on redeveloped buildings at Rushikonda Hills has triggered widespread criticism. Citizens, political leaders, and civil groups have raised concerns over transparency, environmental compliance, and plans to involve private hospitality operators.

The project, funded by taxpayers, has long been controversial due to alleged fund misuse and ecological violations. The recent public notice, issued on October 11, seeks ideas for sustainable tourism-oriented use. A separate meeting in Vijayawada on October 17 invites input from national and international hospitality operators. Critics question why the government, which opposed the project during the YSRCP regime, is now promoting private participation.

Jana Sena corporator Peethala Murthy Yadav, petitioner of a pending PIL before the Andhra Pradesh High Court, called the notices a violation of environmental laws and court orders. “The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change conducted a site inspection. Its report is still awaited. Issuing notices now amounts to contempt,” he said, urging authorities to stop consultations until court directives are fully implemented.

Murthy Yadav also raised concerns about plans for hospitality development on nine acres at the Rushikonda foothills, six under the Tourism Department and three under the Forest Department.

Protests have followed, with Jana Jagarana Samithi and the CPM urging the government to repurpose the buildings for public use, such as official residences, a naval museum, or a Science Park. Vizag Children’s Club suggested transforming the ₹452-crore facility into a science, technology, and cultural museum, along with a North Andhra Heritage Centre, emphasizing consultation with local communities, environmental experts, and civil society instead of online polls.

The debate highlights continuing public concerns over governance, environmental safeguards, and the involvement of private players in taxpayer-funded projects, keeping Rushikonda Hills at the center of controversy.
