City Police to Crack Down on Illegal Firecrackers Ahead of Diwali
With Diwali just five days away, the Visakhapatnam City Police have launched a strict crackdown on illegal firecrackers. Commissioner Dr. Shankhabrata Bagchi said police will carry out intensive inspections at all stations. Legal action will follow anyone who violates the rules.
All vendors must have a valid license and follow strict safety protocols. Shops must stay at least 15 metres apart and sell only green crackers. Dr. Bagchi said all storage sheds must be non-combustible, locked, and located safely away from hospitals, schools, and religious sites.
Additional safety measures are in place. Oil lamps, gas flames, and open fires are banned. Electric lighting must be secure. Each shop must have sand buckets, water, and fire extinguishers. Staff and licensees must be trained in emergency procedures. Any fire, explosion, theft, or shortage must be reported immediately.
Fireworks may be used only between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Diwali. Buyers should maintain distance in queues and avoid using hand sanitizers while lighting crackers. Shops must display warning notices. Firecrackers cannot be sold to anyone under 18.
Authorities will inspect shops before granting licenses and may carry out periodic re-inspections. Vendors must distribute safety guidelines issued by the Chief Controller of Explosives (PESO), Nagpur. Public fireworks displays require prior approval, a minimum 100-metre distance from the audience, and proper firefighting and first aid arrangements.
Residents who spot illegal fireworks storage should report it immediately. They can call 100 or 112, contact the CP at 79950 95799, or visit the nearest police station. Dr. Bagchi assured that informants’ details will remain confidential and strict action will follow against offenders.
