Andhra Pradesh DGP Warns of Terror Links in Ganja Smuggling
Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta has warned that ganja smuggling networks are linked to terrorist groups. He said the police will intensify their efforts to curb the narcotics trade across the State.
Speaking at a drug destruction programme held at the Jindal Urban Waste Management Limited yard near Kapuluppada, Mr. Gupta said drug trafficking is a growing threat to national security.
During the event, police destroyed seized narcotics worth Rs 5.21 crore. The stock included 10,148 kg of ganja, 19.3 litres of hashish oil, and 1 kg of opium. These drugs were seized in 533 cases registered under the NDPS Act in Visakhapatnam district.
Mr. Gupta said ganja cultivation within Andhra Pradesh has almost stopped, but smugglers are now bringing the drug from other States. Police have arrested 1,435 suspects so far — 712 from Visakhapatnam, 332 from other districts, and 391 from other States.
Officers also seized 96 two-wheelers, 39 cars, 16 auto-rickshaws, and two lorries used for smuggling. To strengthen enforcement, police have opened 647 drug offender sheets and started financial investigations in 25 cases to trace illegal money flow. Several benami assets linked to the trade have been identified and submitted to courts for attachment.
Technology has become a key part of the operation. Police have deployed 15 drones for surveillance and nine trained sniffer dogs — the highest number in the State. More than 13,000 CCTV cameras have been installed in key and remote areas. Eight check posts have been set up on major routes, and joint operations are being conducted with GRP and RPF at railway stations.
Under the ‘Maarpu’ de-addiction programme, police have identified 866 drug users and offered support for rehabilitation.
Mr. Gupta said the police will continue their strong campaign against drug traffickers while helping those struggling with addiction to recover and return to normal life.
