CPI(M) questions ASR encounters, calls for judicial review
The CPI(M) called for a judicial inquiry on Wednesday into two encounters that occurred on consecutive days in the Maredumilli Agency area of Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district. They allege that the police may have used unlawful force instead of attempting to take the Maoists into custody.
CPI(M) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao stated that initial reports suggest the police had an opportunity to apprehend the Maoists alive but chose to conduct what he described as “fake encounters.” He expressed serious concerns regarding the conduct of anti-Maoist operations and underscored the need for an independent investigation to establish accountability.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao also raised concerns about extensive police operations in Vijayawada, Eluru, and Kakinada, where over 50 suspected Maoists and their sympathizers were reportedly detained. He emphasized that all detainees must be presented before the appropriate courts without delay, as required by law.
Additionally, he highlighted complaints from Adivasi communities in the ASR district, who claim they are being questioned, harassed, and intimidated due to suspicions of aiding Maoists. He warned that such actions foster fear and mistrust among local residents, potentially worsening the already vulnerable conditions in these areas.
The CPI(M) leader asserted that all counter-insurgency measures must adhere to legal safeguards and respect the rights of local communities. He cautioned that excessive actions by security forces could undermine long-term efforts to address extremism in the region.
