ICG Maps Out Future Responsibilities in India’s Blue Economy

The Indian Coast Guard Headquarters, Eastern Seaboard, organised a seminar on the Government of India’s Blue Economy initiatives here on Tuesday. The discussions centred on the evolving roles of the Coast Guard and other agencies in marine environmental protection and maritime development.

The session was chaired by Additional Director General Donny Michael, PTM, TM, Coast Guard Commander (Eastern Seaboard). The event saw participation from representatives of Madras University, Andhra University, CIFNET Vizag, the Indian Maritime Foundation, DG Shipping/MMD Vizag, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, INCOIS, NIOT, and the Vizag Chapter of the Company of Master Mariners of India.

Speakers highlighted policy directions, best practices, and emerging opportunities to enhance India’s Blue Economy framework, aligning efforts with the national Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. They emphasised the importance of sustainable growth across maritime safety, coastal infrastructure, environmental protection, and responsible shipping.

Participants also underlined the Coast Guard’s expanding role in pollution response, ecological monitoring, and maritime law enforcement. The seminar called for stronger inter-agency coordination between central and state authorities to ensure better marine governance, protect coastal communities, and foster growth in fisheries, tourism, offshore energy, and trade.
