Animal Exchange Between IGZP and Ranchi Zoo Completed
The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam has completed another round of animal exchange with the Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi, Ranchi, bringing several new species to its collection. According to Curator G. Mangamma, the animals arrived early on November 28, 2025, transported under strictly monitored conditions.
“We have received a pair of Himalayan black bears, a gharial, a spotted dove, and a silver pheasant,” Mangamma said. “These new additions enhance our collection, especially since some come as pairs, which support future breeding programs.”
In exchange, the Visakhapatnam zoo sent an Asiatic wild dog, a Bengal monitor lizard, a black swan, a wild boar, a barn owl, a grey pelican, and an Alexandrine parakeet to the Ranchi park. The curator explained the exchange aimed to diversify species at both zoos and support long-term conservation goals.
Mangamma highlighted the arrival of the bear pair as particularly significant. “We currently have one male Himalayan black bear. With the arrival of another male and a female, we can now encourage natural pairing, which is vital for maintaining a healthy population,” she said. She also noted that the gharial, spotted dove, and silver pheasant will enrich the zoo’s exhibits.
All animals from Ranchi are currently in quarantine as per standard protocol. Officials said once the mandatory observation and health checks are completed, the animals will be moved to their enclosures, and public viewing will begin after they acclimate to their new homes.
