Visakhapatnam Zoo, Kambalakonda Sanctuary to Get Major Upgrade
The Central and State governments have initiated comprehensive plans to modernize the Visakhapatnam Zoological Park along with the adjoining Kambalakonda Sanctuary. Lawmakers and officials intend to transform the zoo following the successful model of the Singapore Zoo.
Earlier this year, a delegation visited Singapore to study its zoo management systems. Subsequently, experts from Singapore were invited to Visakhapatnam, where they spent two days assessing both the zoo and the sanctuary, offering valuable recommendations. This collaborative exercise took place about six months ago, and now MP Sribharat is actively seeking central government funding to support the proposed developmental works.
Due to the Forest Department’s limited capacity for large-scale projects, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has been designated to oversee critical infrastructure development. Spread across 625 acres, the zoo currently utilizes only 325 acres for conservation, leaving close to 300 acres unused. The adjacent Kambalakonda Sanctuary, positioned opposite the zoo, will also be developed in tandem.
The redevelopment plan includes eco-friendly recreational activities aimed at boosting tourism, alongside enhanced wildlife and aquatic attractions. To move forward, VMRDA has issued a request for proposals, inviting qualified agencies to submit integrated development plans by December 23. The shortlisted proposals will lead to appointing consultants who will guide implementation based on their expertise.
VMRDA Chairman Pranav Gopal expressed confidence to The Coastal Times that the project will attract strong interest from industry experts and stakeholders.
