Anakapalli district to host India’s first 6-GW solar ingot and wafer unit

Anakapalli district is set to become a major centre for solar manufacturing. The country’s first integrated 6-GW ingot and wafer production facility will be established here.

ReNew Photovoltaics, a subsidiary of ReNew Energy Global PLC, will invest Rs 3,990 crore in a greenfield plant at Rambilli. This will be India’s first commercial-scale unit to produce ingots and wafers, the core components used in solar cells and modules.

The State Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has approved the project. It will go before the Cabinet for final clearance next week. According to officials, the facility will help reduce import dependence, especially on China. It will also support the national target of achieving 300-GW of solar capacity by 2030. The plant comes under the Union government’s production-linked incentive scheme for solar manufacturing.

The project will be spread across more than 130 acres. The land has been identified and will soon be handed over for construction. Commercial production is expected to begin in January 2028.

Once operational, the unit is likely to create about 1,200 skilled and semi-skilled jobs. It will require a dedicated supply of 95 MW of power and 10 MLD of water. Officials say the project will help position Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam as emerging hubs for clean-energy technology.

“Andhra Pradesh continues to attract large renewable energy investments and is contributing to the country’s green growth,” an official statement said.
