GITAM–Boreum Pact Aims to Boost India’s Cosmetic Innovation
GITAM Deemed to be University has signed a memorandum of understanding with Boreum Beauty, the parent company of KIWANA, to jointly develop next-generation encapsulated ingredients for skin, hair, and dermaceutical products.
The MoU was exchanged on Wednesday by L. Srinivas, Principal of the GITAM School of Pharmacy, and M. Sivaramakrishna, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Boreum, in the presence of GITAM Registrar D. Gunasekharan.
Mr. Sivaramakrishna stated that the company plans to file 30 patents over the next three years as part of its effort to enhance India’s capability in high-value cosmetic ingredient innovation and decrease reliance on imported actives.
The collaboration will focus on biotech-enabled delivery systems, including nanostructured lipid carriers and other advanced technologies used in personal-care formulations. He said the partnership will help Boreum strengthen its research and development ecosystem and speed up the creation of high-performance ingredients.
Registrar Gunasekharan said GITAM has been prioritizing research partnerships. He noted that the School of Pharmacy is currently managing projects worth about Rs 2 crore funded by the Department of Science and Technology and other agencies. He also highlighted that the university has set up MURTI labs to support advanced research and is encouraging greater industry participation.
Principal Srinivas said the School of Pharmacy works closely with pharmaceutical companies and recently secured the 33rd rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework. He said he hopes the collaboration with Boreum will enhance the faculty’s research exposure and expertise.
The MoU marks a step toward building a domestic supply chain for high-value cosmetic ingredients and strengthens GITAM’s position in India’s personal-care innovation landscape.
