Flight operations at Vizag airport returning to normal
Airport Director N. Purushottam said operations are steadily returning to normal after recent disruptions related to an IndiGo issue. “Of the 62 scheduled movements on Wednesday, just 10 were cancelled, and no flight was delayed beyond 30 minutes,” he told reporters, noting a marked improvement over the peak disruption days earlier this month.
The contrast is stark: on Dec. 5, 30 flights were canceled, and on Dec. 7, the number was 20. Between Dec. 4 and 7, the airport handled 58 to 62 movements daily, but cancellations spiked to 30, and delays exceeded 30 minutes on Dec. 4. Since Dec. 8, cancellations have decreased from 16 to 14, then to 10 on Dec. 10, while delays dropped from 10 minutes on Dec. 9 to none on Dec. 10.
IndiGo, which runs 42‑44 flights a day from Visakhapatnam, accounted for the bulk of cancellations during the crisis, cutting its cancellations from 30 on Dec. 5 to 14 on Dec. 8‑9 and to 10 on Dec. 10. Air India, Air India Express, India One Air and Scoot largely kept schedules, recording only a few cancellations and brief delays.
Despite the upheaval, the airport continued to manage 58‑62 scheduled movements daily. Help desks, real‑time flight updates and close airline coordination have been deployed to assist passengers, who are urged to check with their carriers or the airport’s website or app before travelling.
“With cancellations and delays continuing to decline, Visakhapatnam Airport is confident of a complete return to normal operations soon. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of passengers,” Purushottam added.
